The IEBC returning officer for Gichugu constituency in Kirinyaga county Geoffrey Gitobu has died under mysterious circumstances.
Gitobu is said to have collapsed and died on Monday, August 22 outside the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) offices in Nanyuki, Laikipia County.
A source told a local daily that the officer visited IEBC offices in Nanyuki to print some documents on Monday. As he waited to be attended to, he collapsed outside the electoral body’s offices and was rushed to Nanyuki Teaching and Referral Hospital hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Gitobu served as the Returning Officer for Gichugu constituency in the just concluded August 9 general election.
At the time of his sudden death, he had taken a three-day off from his workplace in Kirinyaga to visit his family in Nanyuki.
Former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission Commissioner Dr. Roselyn Akombe said: “No words to describe the pain of yet another loss of a public servant who was serving his country….Lost for any words to condole the family of Gitobu and the IEBC staff.”

An autopsy is expected to be done on Gitobu’s body to establish the cause of death.
